Allen Ahee was the inspiration
Two years ago I g
ot a call from a dear friend in Detroit. He said “There’s this guy in Arizona, just got out of the joint.” Producers were interested in making a movie based on his life but they insisted on a book first.
Allen’s friend in Detroit asked my friend in Detroit if he knew any writers. And yeah, he knew me. I’ve written professionally for a long time and he knew I’d always dreamed of doing a mob bio. I am hopelessly addicted to the stories and the way they’re told.
We did our interviews by phone over the course of two years. He essentially called me any time he thought of something interesting and I typed – without interrupting – as he spoke.
When he started to repeat, I knew we were near the end of his best stuff. I started asking questions to fill the gaps and began putting things in order.
We had long conversations and became good friends. Now, with the book, our fates are intertwined.
